Day 198: Re-Writing the Story

(I'm part of a continued community of writers and mourners in a 30-day writing workshop found here: http://www.refugeingrief.com/30daywriting/)

TODAY'S PROMPT: Make a found poem from other text (i.e. a newspaper).

September 14, 2014

When I was home this summer, I found this book in a box of donated books for my sister's classroom:

I asked her if I could hang onto it because of the text:

The book was filled with simple Bridget [+ verb] sentences and "Bridget said" endings. Seemed like the perfect book to cut up and make a new story at some point down the road.

Funny thing is that book stayed hidden between some other things I brought back to Korea until today, when I came across it again and decided to take it downtown with my to a favorite restaurant/used bookstore hangout. Today would be a good day to do something creative, I thought. Something to get me out of this funk I've been in. (See last post)

So, after lunch with a friend, I headed over to "Buy the Book" and got myself settled with some chai tea and a slice of pumpkin pie. Out came the scissors and I went to town isolating the sentences and then stringing them together again, making a story.

The metaphors of this new story are not lost on me. What did surprise me was as soon as I completed it and photographed it, I checked my email to find today's writing prompt for the grief writing course. And here we're being asked to do exactly what I had just spent time doing.

Funny. Gareth? Were you nudging me again? I feel like you do that sometimes, babe. I really feel like you do.

Anyway, here's the end result:
